More than 40,000 Retail Stores and Restaurants Open Christmas Day, 2012 - Store Opening and Closing Hours December 25, 2012 - Starbucks Walgreens, McDonald’s, Family Dollar, etc.

Although a vast majority of major retail chains will be closed all Christmas Day, December 25, 2012, there will still be more than 40,000 retail stores that will be opening doors and doing business on Christmas Day. Family Dollar (FDO), CVS (CVS), Rite Aid (RAD), and Walgreens (WAG) are just some of the retail chains that will have a majority of store locations open for shopping on Christmas Day 2012. That's more than 25,000 retail outlets open just from those four chains, and they are not the only retailers that will be retailing on December 25, 2012.

Family Dollar is the unfortunate retail chain that has born the brunt of criticism for daring to be one of the few retail chains opening its stores on Christmas Day. In fact, Family Dollar has opened its retail store doors on Christmas Day for many years. It just hasn't been as fashionable to have big objections to retail stores open on Christmas Day until recently.

Other major retail chains like CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens have had store hours on Christmas Day for longer than Family Dollar. But the retail defilement of the Christmas Holiday is excused for CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens because of the "essential" products they sell. Of course "essential" is a matter of opinion and since it's difficult to even find the "essential" health-related products at these "drug" stores which have more aisles of housewares, beauty products, seasonal stuff, electronics and lawn furniture, it's really not fair to give these stores a get-out-of-Christmas-criticism-free card.

Convenience stores are traditionally the go-to retail locations on Christmas Day in the U.S. Most major convenience store chains like 7-Eleven and Circle K as well as smaller convenience store chains like QuikTrip and Casey's General Stores will be open without interruption throughout Christmas Day 2012, and most of these convenience stores open on Christmas Day will be on their regular 24/7 store hours schedule.

Luckily for those who will shopping in retail stores sometime on Christmas Day, convenience stores and drug stores have wised up to the fact that it is the one day of the year when they have an almost unrivaled competitive advantage. With that realization they're getting smarter each year about stocking seasonal merchandise that is suitable for gift-giving besides eggnog and Oreos... or including eggnog and Oreos, depending on who you're buying the Christmas gift for.

The total amount of sales transactions that will happen in retail stores open on December 25, 2012 will not be all that significant compared to the biggest retail sales events in the 2012 Christmas holiday shopping season. But Christmas Day 2012 retail store sales will definitely be significant to shoppers who desperately need to make a December 25th purchase. Christmas Day sales activity, no matter how small, will also be significant to the retail employees who will be working on December 25th in order to facilitate those desperate Christmas Day retail transactions.

In a memo to its franchisees, 7-Eleven corporate leaders reminded its franchisees that Christmas Day was one of the busiest days of the year for the stores that remained open for regular operating hours, which are generally 24 hours. McDonald's (MCD) reported similar sales results to its franchisees in a letter that encouraged all franchise locations to offer at least some Christmas Day store hours.

Some national U.S. restaurant chains like Denny's, IHOP, Waffle House are open 365 days per year, and Christmas Day is no exception. Other national chains like Starbucks (SBUX), McDonald's and Jack in the Box will have all of its company-owned restaurant locations open on Christmas Day, and some franchise-operated locations open as well.

Basically all retail stores and restaurants that open their doors for business on Christmas Day are doing it because it's profitable, not because it's kind. And for those who find themselves needing to make some kind of purchase on December 25, 2012, that's a good enough reason.
