Whatever retailers are calling it, clearance sales, deals, coupons, discounts, and freebies have been offered this week and are extending through this weekend. After repeatedly pushing traditional shopping event deals to start early and end late, retailers have unintentionally conditioned shoppers to believe that discounts have no deadlines and sales are perpetual.
But some deals and discounts do still have a specific end date, especially when they involve in-store physical coupons, and online coupon codes. Today - Saturday December 29, 2012 - is the expiration date for deals and discounts at Amazon, Kohl's, Macy's, Sears, Staples and more retailers both online and in stores. When those coupons expire, the deals that they're attached to expire with them. Really. They mean it this time. Seriously.
Actually, it's impossible to know what retailers will do next. But what we do know for sure is that today, December 29, 2012, these retail deals are expiring...
- Amazon is offering discounts of 24% - 40% off the regular price of 24 different models of Samsung HDTV's and they all expire today, December 29th.
- Macy's, Kohl's and Sears are all offering an additional discount off your entire purchase through the end of the 12-29-2012 shopping day.
- Best Buy, Staples, Wal-Mart and Target have 50% - 80% discounts on electronics like Apple accessories, computer hardware, Blu-ray, cameras, camcorders, Bluetooth devices and other gadgets and many of those expire today, December 29, 2012.
What we also know for sure is that these after-Christmas-year-end deals expiring today are good enough to check out, and that tomorrow they'll be gone. Click here for all year-end deals expiring on December 29th >>
Shoppers anticipate that the closer it gets to the end of the year, the better the retail deals will get. That's how things usually work. But the 2012 Christmas holiday shopping season has been anything but usual.
It's true that in some cases the special end-of-2012 clearance deals that are being offered today will last through New Year's Eve. Then it is likely that subsequent New Year's Day sales will merge with traditional New-Year's-Resolution-January-White Sales, and then smoothly transition into Inauguration-MLK combo weekend sales.
But whether the New Year's Eve and New Year's Day clearance sales and deals will continue to be better and the discounts will continue to get deeper is any shopper's guess. Most retailers started their after-Christmas, year-end clearance discounts at a modest 50% off. So odds are that there's nowhere to go but down for the rest of the year and beyond.
