A record number of the largest U.S. retail chains opened their stores for shopping on Thanksgiving Day November 22, 2012 with more than 200 retail chains opening their retail doors for Pre-Black Friday shopping. Wal-Mart got plenty of media attention for its decision to open its stores on Thanksgiving Day 2012 two hours earlier than last year. Wal-Mart stores throughout the U.S. will be open at 8:00 PM and remain open throughout 10:00 PM on Black Friday, November 23, 2012. Target also recently announced some surprise Thanksgiving Day in-store shopping hours, after speculation was that the chain would not be playing the one-up game with its competitors in the 2012 holiday season. Target stores opened for Thanksgiving Day Pre-Black Friday shopping at 9:00 PM.

Macy’s, Best Buy, and Kohl’s are not officially opening their stores on Thanksgiving Day, but as soon as the clock strikes midnight, these department stores will be opening their doors to begin their Black Friday sales. It is expected that there will be more than a dozen major retail chains that will join the Black Friday midnight store opening madness.
