One of the most valuable assets of the largest U.S. retail chains is the value of the company's brand. The brand is more than just the name and logo of the company. A retail company's brand is its identity, its image, and its reputation. And while it might be difficult to put a numeric value on a retail chain's identity, image, and reputation, it is undeniable that those aspects of a retail business have great value.

Each year the global brand consultancy company Interbrand takes on the task of assigning a monetary value to the brands of the largest U.S. retail industry companies. The value of the brand is determined based on a company's financial performance, the brand's contribution to consumer purchase decisions, and speculation about the brand's stability and ability to continue to perform well financially. Once a monetary value is assigned for each retail industry brand being reviewed, the top 50 retail brands are then assigned a ranking number, according to its calculated brand value for the year.

What follows is a multi-year comparison of the best and most valuable brands in the U.S. retail industry for the years 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009. The list is arranged alphabetically, according to the retail company name. The numbers listed next to each year are the Interbrand ranking the brand received that year, out of 50 ranked U.S. retail industry brands.
