A comparison of this year's list of retail best employers with lists in previous years reveals that there are no surprises this year. The same 15 retail companies on the list this year have been on the Fortune "Best Companies to Work For" list just about every year. There are no retail newcomers this year and the only retail employer that fell off the list since last year is eBay.
Mostly, these same 15 best retail employers maintain their best practices from year to year and switch number rankings on the list slightly up or down. The exception to that on the 2010 list was Starbucks, which fell from the #24 spot on the 2009 list to #93 on the 2010 list. After a year of store closings, layoffs, and labor cutbacks, it is an accomplishment for Starbucks to appear on the list at all. This is a credit to the Starbucks workplace culture, which took a beating in 2009, but wasn't beaten.
What follows is the complete list of retail companies included on Fortune Magazine's 2010 "Best Companies to Work For" list. The list is arranged according to the ranking assigned to it by Fortune Magazine's editors. The number ranking is compared to the ranking of 100 top employers from all U.S. industries.
