Many of the largest U.S. retail chains started their 2012 back-to-school and back-to-college sales and deals in June, with the intention of running back-to-school specials all summer long. But some major retail chains have taken the more traditional back-to-school shopping season approach, and only started heavily promoting their back-to-school deals and sales closer to the time when kids and college students are actually headed back to school.

- Separate Off to College and Get Ready for K-12 shopping sections
- Amazon Student membership for college students which provides six months of free Amazon Prime benefits, special student-related deals and promotions, and free TV and movie streaming. After the first six months, the Amazon Student membership is $39 per year, compared to the $79 for Amazon Prime. There's also an Android and iPhone app available for Amazon Student members.
- School supplies under $5 are also eligible for free Super Saver Shipping
- New, used, rental, and e-Texbooks are available by ISBN number, as well as a textbook sellback program
- Free MP3 Promotion gives you a $5 MP3 purchase credit with the purchase of $25 or more in textbooks through September 30, 2012
- Many independent sellers are beating Amazon's back-to-school prices, some selling school supplies for just a penny.
- Instead of a back-to-school sale, The Children's Place is staging a Stock Up Sale with t-shirts as low as $5 and jeans as low as $10
- Uniforms and backpacks for boys, girls and "babies" are 25% off
- "Extended" sizes for girls and boys are available
- Online deals for school supplies, dorm supplies, uniforms, and miscellaneous sort of school-related stuff
- Special mobile coupons sent to your mobile phone when you scan the QR code on the Dollar General website, or text BTS to 34898
- Students and teachers can win a $50,000 educational grant in the Dollar General "My Teacher, My Hero" Literacy Foundation Essay Contest
