Each year Forbes magazine publishes its list of "America's Largest Private Companies" list, which ranks major companies with private ownership by annual revenue. This is in contrast to the more famous Fortune 500 list, which focuses primarily (although not exclusively) on publicly traded corporations.
In 2010, 55 of the 223 companies included on the Forbes annual business ranking were from the retail industry. This is a slightly higher percentage of retail industry presence than was found on the 2009 Largest Private Companies. This indicates that in the 2010 year of economic recovery, the revenues of some members of the retail industry outpaced private companies in other industries.
