When thinking of the world's largest retailers, most people think of the high-profile retail chains which are publicly-traded on the U.S. stock exchange. In the U.S. some of the largest chains in the retail industry have private ownership, and these privately-owned retail chains have a significant presence in U.S. retailing and create significant retail competition.
Each year Forbes magazine publishes its list of "America's Largest Private Companies" list, which ranks major companies with private ownership by annual revenue. This is in contrast to the more famous Fortune 500 list, which focuses primarily (although not exclusively) on publicly traded corporations.
In 2009, 20% of the companies included on the Forbes annual business ranking were from the retail industry. Below is the list of those retailers, arranged according to the rank assigned to it by Forbes editors. The dollar figure attached to each company was its 2009 annual revenue as reported by the company, or estimated by Forbes.
