The largest retail chains in 14 countries around the world are supermarkets and 20 of the 82 U.S. retail chains on the 2011 "world's largest" list are supermarket chains. This doesn't include major retail chains like Wal-Mart and Target that are aggressively working to take a substantial piece of the retail grocery market share by expanding the fresh and packaged food product offerings in their stores.
Between the 2010 and 2011 Largest U.S. Retailers list, there were a few significant changes in the supermarket sector of the U.S. retail industry. Save Mart, Roundy's, and Raley's all fell in the Largest U.S. Supermarkets rankings, losing significant ground to their direct competitors. Two retail supermarket chains joined the Global Powers list this year - Demoulas Market Basket and Ingles Market joined the list in 2011, with rankings of 239 and 247, respectively.

According to their reported revenue figures for 2009, these supermarket chains were ranked as the "biggest" because they had the highest annual sales figures. In this complete list of the largest supermarket chains, the number in the left column is the global ranking number assigned to the company, based on its revenue figures, compared to other top retail organizations worldwide.
