Definition: "In the red" is a phrase which refers to the red ink that is used when there are losses on a financial balance sheet. As a slang phrase, "in the red" means that a person or organization is losing money, has net losses, or is in debt.
Examples: In 2008, many retail organizations were in the red prior to entering the critical holiday shopping season.
