The Portuguese economy was hit hard by recession, and as a result, retailing trends in Portugal were similar to those seen in the U.S. Discretionary spending decreased, discount pricing became a primary strategy, and many small, independent retailers became insolvent. Consequently, Portugal's largest retail discount chain, Jeronimo Martins, fared well and rose nine positions on the global retail ranking list, compared to 2010.
What follows is a list of the retail companies based in Portugal that were included on the 2011 Global Powers of Retailing ranking list, which identifies the largest retailers in the world. The number in the left column is the global ranking number assigned to the company, based on its sales figures, compared to other top retail companiess worldwide.
