Since the U.S. dominates the global retailing industry, North America is the home of most of the world’s largest retailers. Canada and Mexico each have their own largest retail chains and both countries have retail companies who do business throughout the world, but North America's biggest contributions to global retailing mostly reside in the U.S. Retail business is responsible for two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), U.S. retail companies have established a substantial presence on every continent, and the world's largest retail company - Wal-Mart - is based in the U.S.

Each year the “Global Powers of Retailing” report from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES Magazine, ranking retailers from all over the world according to total revenue. In 2011, the 14th annual list was released, ranking 250 retailers from 32 different countries.

What follows is the largest retail companies from each country in North America - Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. This 2011 list reflects the revenue that was generated in 2010, which was the beginning of a recovery from global economic recession.
