Each year the HRC invites Fortune 1000 companies complete what the HRC calls its "Corporate Equality Index" CEI survey. After answering questions about the policies, benefits, training, support groups, etc. available to LGBT employees, each company is given a score. Companies which receive a perfect CEI score are included on the HRC's annual "Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality" list.

For every "best list," there must also be a "worst" list. Although the HRC doesn't officially publish the "Worst Places to Work Because of LGBT Inequality" list, the information is available by way of its "Buying for Equality" Shopping Guide. In order to guide members of the LGBT community towards spending money with gay-friendly companies, the HRC also reveals which companies received the lowest CEI results. These lowest-scoring companies would be the companies that would be ranked on a "Worst Places to Work Because of LGBT Inequality," if such a list was compailed and published.

To be fair, some of the companies have earned a low ranking from the HRC by not responding to the survey, not necessarily because they have a gay-unfriendly workplace. But by including these non-responsive companies on the "don't buy" list, the message is clear that choosing not to play the HRC's game is not an acceptable option as far as the LGBT activist community is concerned.

What follows is a list of the U.S. retail industry companies which received the lowest rankings on the 2010 Corporate Equality Index Survey conducted by the HRC. The list below is arranged alphabetically, not in order of their CEI ranking numbers.
