The companies that were determined to be the "fastest-growing" by Inc. Magazine for its 2012 Fastest-Growing Privately-Held Companies list were measured by the percentage of revenue growth over a four-year period. So, the 2012 Inc. 5000 list is a measure of the revenue change over the four year-period of 2008 - 2011. In order to qualify, the potential Inc. 5000 companies first had to be U.S. based, privately held, and independent, with revenue in 2008 of at least $100,000, and revenue in 2011 of at least $2 million.
On the 2012 Fastest Growing Retail Companies list, the revenue range was from $2 million to $708 million for the latest measured calendar year of 2011. The percentage of growth for these fastest-growing privately-owned retailers ranged from 8% to 10,160% between 2008 and the end of 2011. These are growth rates that are enviable for any retail company of any size.
Not only does the Inc. 5000 provide insights about the trends in small business retailing in the U.S., it also provides a valuable list to retail job hunters. With growth comes expansion and with expansion comes jobs. Small businesses from all industries employ about 50% of all private sector employees in the U.S. According to a recent study by Millennial Branding, 47% of full-time employees between the ages of 19-29 work for businesses which employ less than 100 people.

The number in the left column indicates how the company was ranked in terms of percentage of revenue growth out of 5,000 companies from all industries.
