How do you measure the reputation of a brand in social media? According Yomego, a social media agency based in the UK, you first have to measure a the “reach” of a brand, which is the “noise” that is being generated in social spaces, or how much the brand is being mentioned. Then Yomego says you have to measure the “popularity” of a brand, which is actually the positive satisfaction level of all that noise.

After that, you have to consider how the current month’s activity compares to the previous three months (the “recency”). Then using a proprietary calculation of the reach, the satisfaction, and the recency of any particular brand, a Social Media Reputation (SMR) score can be derived. In simple terms if people are talking about your brand a lot and most of that conversation is positive, then your brand has a good reputation (or “SMR”) in social media.

What follows is a list of the U.S. retail industry companies that have the best social media reputation in 2011, according to the Yomego agency. The SMR number indicates the SMR score that the company was given, which creates a relative SMR ranking among the top 50 companies from all industries in the U.S. in 2011, which is indicated by the number to the left of each company name.
