Build-A-Bear Retail Stores Founders Facts and Trivia:

The idea for Build-A-Bear Workshop came from a shopping trip that founder Maxine Clark took with a 10 year-old named Katie. When Katie couldn't find a stuffed animal that she liked, she innocently suggested that they could make their own stuffed animal. And so Maxine did - in a bear-y big way.

The first Build-A-Bear workshop was opened in 1997 in the St. Louis Galleria mall.
