The original Whole Foods Market store was opened in Austin, Texas on September 20, 1980 by four people - current CEO John Mackey, Rene Lawson Hardy, Craig Weller and Mark Skiles. Prior to that Weller and Skiles had owned a Clarksville Natural Grocery and Mackey and Hardy had owned a health food store called SaferWay, where they also lived and bathed using the kitchen's Hobart dishwasher. Since that first opening, Whole Foods Company has acquired 15 businesses and retail chains as part of its expansion to the Whole Foods Market grocery chain that is known today.
