What is the best retail employer for 2012 college grads? According to a survey of nearly 60,000 2012 college graduates at 318 U.S. universities, there are 24 ideal companies to work for that are retail companies or have significant retail operations as part of their business. These are the retail companies that the 2012 grads think would be the best place to get their first job with their new college degree. These are the retail companies that are "ideal" employers in the minds of those who are armed with their new degrees. These are the retail companies that are undoubtedly receiving a lot of retail resumes.
The U.S. job market will still be challenging for 2012 college graduates, but employers still need to be concerned if they don't have an image as an "ideal" employer. Even if employers receive multiple resumes for every job opening, they are probably not receiving the best resumes from the best candidates if they are not viewed as being the "best" employer.
What follows is a complete list of the 24 companies that have significant retail operations that were included in the Universum 2012 America's Ideal Employers list. Clearly companies such as BMW, adidas, and AT&T are not strictly retail industry companies, but the retailing part of their business comprises a significant portion of the company's earnings so it is included here. While it is questionable whether the 2012 college grads have their sights set on the retailing side companies like Disney or General Motors, sometimes the retail operations of a company provide the perfect entry point for college graduates with a degree, but no experience.
This Best Retail Employers list is arranged according to how attractive each employer is to the 2012 graduates surveyed. The number in the left column indicates the ranking that the company was given, out of 100 U.S. companies from all industries.
