Retailers Create Retail Flagship Shopping Excitement - Burberry Macy’s and NIKE Barbara Farfan

Every flagship store does its best to create an exciting and engaging shopping experience for its customers, but the Burberry flagship store in London has redefined what retail engagement looks like. High tech meets high fashion in this London flagship store, which claims to be the most technologically sophisticated retail store in the UK. Judging from the cutting edge interactive retail technology features of the store, that claim is probably probably quite accurate indeed.

Another flagship store that wanted to create more customer engagement just finished an extensive six-month makeover. The Nike (NKE) flagship store in Chicago reopened this month, and Bo Jackson cut the red ribbon, just as he had done for the original opening of the Nike flagship 21 years ago. At the opening Jackson noted that the new and improved Nike flagship store was bigger, better, and even more exciting than when it opened as NikeTown in 1991.

An iconic flagship that's also on course for an extensive makeover is New York's Macy's (M) store in Herald Square. Three years and $400 million dollars from now, the historic Macy's will be 100,000 square feet larger, which still will not help the store regain its status as the world's largest retail store

Not every retail store in New York is a flagship store, but somebody forgot to tell that to just about every retailer that decided to open a store there in September. This month's newest New York stores that have been designated as "flagships" include Burlington Coat Factory discount store, Warby Parker eyewear store, Brian Atwood shoe store, MenScience skincare store, Reformation vintage clothing, and Dolce & Gabana luxury fashion.

Outside of the U.S., Tommy Hilfiger opened a Hilfiger Denim flagship concept store in Dubai, Apple opened its newest flagship store in Stockholm, Sweden, and H&M opened a flagship store in Kuala Lumpur, its first in Malaysia.

Future flagship openings include the first Starbucks (SBUX) store in Mumbai scheduled to open in October, the first Nordstrom store in Vancouver scheduled to open in 2015, and the first west coast U.S. UNIQLO store scheduled to open in San Francisco on October 5th.

The final flagship news of the month comes from the flagship happy Big Apple where designer Christian Siriano took the helm of his own 1,000 square foot flagship store. Sirano's NoLita store opened in the same week that he participated in the Fashion Night Out event and staged his 9th New York Fashion Week runway show. As the youngest winner of the Project Runway reality TV show, Siriano's worries about being taken seriously in the fashion industry seem to be over. Or at least they should be for the fiercely popular reality design superstar.
