Some chains, like Office Depot, began their store closings in 2008, but the closings will be completed in 2009.

When shutting down individual sites, some retailers are transferring employees to other locations, but most store closings are resulting in substantial retail employee layoffs. Instead of closing an entire store operation, some retail companies are downsizing by reducing the number of employees per store, or reducing the number of hours each employee works in a week.

Even though they are closing underperforming stores, many retailers are offsetting these closings by opening new stores in 2009.
