Top U.S. Retail Industry Corporations on the 2009 Fortune 500 List
Revenue Rankings of America's Largest Retailers for 2008 and Yearly Comparisons

By Barbara Farfan, About.com

For the 55th year, Fortune Magazine compiled its "Fortune 500" list, which is both a prestigious and practical ranking of some of the largest corporations in the U.S. The 2009 Fortune 500 rankings are based on 2008 annual gross revenue figures, not on profits. This explains why a notable number of the companies on the 2009 list actually experienced a net loss in 2008.

After a year of upheaval in corporate America, the total earnings of the Fortune 500 companies on the 2008 list was 85% lower than the companies on the 2007 list. Fortune Magazine spokespeople cited this as the largest one-year drop since 1955, when the list was first compiled and published.

Below is a list of U.S. retail industry companies that are included on 2008 "Fortune 500" list. While some companies below may not be primarily or exclusively retailers, a significant portion of their revenue is derived from retail sales.

This list is arranged according to the ranking each company was assigned on the 2008 Fortune 500 list, and includes comparison rankings from previous years for each company.
