In May, 2013 Fortune Magazine published its "Fortune 500" list for the 59th time, ranking the largest U.S. companies, both privately owned and publicly traded, according to annual revenue. As is true every year, the 2013 Fortune 500 rankings are based on the annual gross revenue figures, not the profits for the previous fiscal year for each company included on the list.
This is a list of U.S. retail companies and companies that have retailing as a significant part of their business that have been included on the Fortune 500 list in 2013, and in the five years prior to that, from 2008 to 2012. So this Fortune 500 multi-year comparison chart includes companies that solely do retailing like Wal-Mart and Costco, as well as companies that have retailing as a significant part of their business like Apple, CVS/Caremark, and U.S. auto companies like GM and Ford. The upward and downward trends of some of the largest companies in the U.S. can be easily spotted using this retail Fortune 500 comparison chart.
Since the Fortune 500 ranking numbers provide a comparison to each company's progress relative to all U.S. companies in all industries, a rise or fall in the Fortune 500 rankings doesn't necessarily correlate to a rise or fall in an individual company’s revenue. However, the ranking comparisons indicate an individual retail company's performance relative to all other U.S. companies, whether direct competitors or not. A rise or fall in the rankings often reflects the importance or retail relevance of the company to the consuming population as a whole.
