Goody's, Linens 'n Things, Steve & Barry's, and Circuit City are some of the retailers that said good-bye to the U.S. retail industry forever in the first quarter of 2009.

More major retailers including S&K Menswear, Boater's World, Kira Plastinina, Chernin's Shoe Outlet, and Christian Bernard began their final liquidation sales in the first three months of 2009 as well.

Ritz Camera, Gottschalk's, BI-LO, Sportsman's Warehouse, and Tumbleweed restaurants are among the retail chains that filed for Chapter 11 protection in court this quarter, and are working to restructure and refinance in order to stay in business.

Experts and analysts are speculating that Saks, Pier 1, Dillards, GM, and Ann Taylor are on the brink of bankruptcy and may not survive through the retail recession.
