Publix Super Markets made a profit of nearly $1.1 billion in 2008, an 8% decline from its 2007 results. But those were pretty good numbers in a challenging economic environment, so the company edged up 6 positions in the Fortune 500 rankings, landing just shy of the top 100, at position #101. With that move, Publix became Florida’s largest corporation, the top among the 14 Florida companies that are ranked by the Fortune 500. To solidify its success, Publix was also ranked #10 on the 2008 “America’s Largest Private Companies” list published by Forbes.
In addition to its Fortune and Forbes rankings, Publix has also earned a spot on Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list for the past 11 years. The company employs more than 140,000 people in five southern states and is the largest employee-owned supermarket chain in the U.S. Employees receive stock when they are hired, and have the opportunity to buy additional shares, which are not traded publicly, throughout their career.
The green programs and initiatives at Publix are well beyond the self-serving greenwashing tactics employed by some retailers. The company launched its "Get Into a Green Routine" program back in 2001 before green retailing was hip. Since then, the company estimates that it has saved over 900 million kilowatt hours by making changes in the lighting and refrigeration systems in its stores.
Publix GreenWise organic products are distributed in a fleet that includes 170 hybrid and 331 flex fuel vehicles, and one global electric motorcar. When you purchase a Publix private label product, you are purchasing food that is packaged in containers that are either recycled or recyclable because Publix demands that of its private label suppliers. For Earth Day 2009 Publix partnered with Newspapers in Education to create an awareness program about the environment and sustainability which reached 395,000 sixth graders in five southern states.
Publix is one of the top rated grocery store chains, according to 32,599 customers who participated in a Consumer Reports survey released in 2009. After acquiring many stores from competitor Albertson’s last year, Publix is expanding even further this year, adding at least nine new locations to the 2009 store openings list.
