College Restaurant Work Provided Key Skills for Marketing Director's Success

My Name

Krystina Borrocci

Age When I Worked This Retail Job

18 - 23 years old

Name of Retailer I Worked For, and Location of Job

Dimitirs Rendezvous, Cabbo Wabbos, and Gator Jakes restaurants in the metro Detroit area - I worked at restaurants/bars during the course of my college career—both undergrad and grad school.

My Current Job, Industry, or Business

Director of Marketing for UHY LLP, a certified public account firm, responsible for CRM implementation, managing an external support team, coordinating and executing events, strengthening relationships with media and professional affiliates, implementing and presenting strategies for generating new business. Working in fast-paced restaurant environments allowed me to improve several different skills that I use today.

Lessons Learned

  • Strong organizational/multi-tasking skills - I had to establish a set of strong organizational skills and come up with a workable “system” for when I started getting busy.
  • Interpersonal communication skills - I learned how to “shoot the sh*t” (pardon my French) and carry a conversation—even when I didn’t really feel like having one. As I worked at the same place for quite some time, I began to develop “regulars”. I came up with my own way of remembering names with faces and vice versa; remembering their likes and dislikes, what’s going on in their life, their kids' names, etc.

Barbara Farfan, Retail Industry Guide, says:

Krystina learned a lot of valuable marketing skills, but probably the best were the skills she developed when dealing with regulars. When little details about customers are remembered, they feel acknowledged and appreciated, which is just about the best feelings a customer interaction can create.
