Another month, another international Apple store opening. The first Apple (AAPL) flagship store in Stockholm, Sweden opened this month with the usual crowds, but without the usual enthusiasm. Reportedly the Stockholm customers queued up before the doors were open were unresponsive to the exuberant behavior of Apple employees after the doors did open. The stoic Swedes didn't want the cheers that they got, they wanted iPhone5's, which they didn't get. But despite a bumpy start, it is expected that the Stockholm flagship store will be another leader in the Apple global retail fleet.
Besides Apple, global flagship stores were opened by Burberry, Burlington Coat Factory, H&M, and Tommy Hilfiger in September, and global flagship plans were announced by Starbucks, UNIQLO, and Nordstrom. If the flagship activity is a credible industry indicator, then global retailing is moving forward at a strong and steady clip.
