U.S. Retail Industry Female CEOs, Board Members and Executive Officers

2008 Annual Census of Women in Retail Fortune 500 Leadership Positions

By , About.com Guide

In 2008, 46.5% of the people working in the U.S. labor force were women, and slightly more than half of those in managerial positions were women. In the same year, however, only 15.2% of the people sitting on the boards of Fortune 500 companies were females.

This is a discrepancy worth noting, according to Catalyst, a non-profit female advocacy organization with headquarters in New York. In order to assess the progress of women in the American workforce, Catalyst created an annual "Census of Women Board Directors of the Fortune 500" report in 1993.

How much presence do women have in the highest levels of leadership in the U.S. retail industry? The answer can be found on four different lists that Catalyst created after researching the retail companies on the most current Fortune 500 list. While Catalyst collects data on Fortune 500 companies from all industries, only the retail industry data is included here.
