The largest retail chains in 14 countries around the world are supermarkets and 20 of the 82 U.S. retail chains on the 20100 "world's largest" list are supermarket chains. This doesn't include major retail chains like Wal-Mart and Target that are aggressively working to take a substantial piece of the retail grocery market share by expanding the fresh and packaged food product offerings in their stores.

As discretionary spending in the U.S. slowed in the wake of the global economic recession, supermarket chains gained prominence in global retailing. Responding to the strong trend of consumer frugality, the U.S. supermarket chains with a wide selection of cost-cutting private label brands and restaurant-substitute prepared foods are the ones that have benefited the most from bad economic times.
