Sixty-four of the 250 largest retail chains in the world are supermarkets and the largest retail chains in 14 countries around the world are supermarkets. In an economy where consumers have cut back on discretionary spending and are hyper-focused on value, supermarkets have responded to the pressure of consumer demands by stocking more low-cost private label brands and more semi-prepared and prepackaged foods.
What follows is the complete list of supermarket retail chains ranked on the 2010 Global Powers of Retailing list. The number in the left column is the global ranking number assigned to the company, based on its revenue figures, compared to other top retail organizations worldwide.
