The largest retail chains in Mexico in 2013 are also some of the largest retailers in the world. Overall, Mexican retailing has fared well compared to global competitors. Almost without exception the largest retail chains in Mexico have risen in the global revenue rankings in the past two years. And joining the World’s Largest Retailers list for the first time in 2013 is the Mexican Department store chain, Coppel SA de CV, which is headquartered in Culiacan, Mexico, and also operates more than 200 stores in Canada.
In all, of the Top 250 retail chains that were ranked on the 2013 Global Powers of Retailing list compiled by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES Magazine, six of them were retail chains based in Mexico. As is the case in most countries, Mexico’s largest retail chains are hypermarket chains which also sell groceries, convenience stores which also sell groceries, and department stores which sell apparel, furniture, and housewares.
The Global Retail Development Index ranked Mexico as one of the Hottest Countries for International Expansion in 2012. And, of course one of the largest retail chains doing business in Mexico is Walmart México y Centroamérica, which is owned by the world’s largest retail chain (but not based in Mexico, so not included on the Largest Mexican Retailers list below). The reputation of Wal-Mart may have been damaged in the eyes of Mexican consumers after it was revealed that the US retailing giant had allegedly been involved in bribery of Mexican government officials. The impact of the Wal-Mart bribery scandal in Mexico will become apparent in the rankings of Wal-Mart’s Mexican based competitors in next year’s World’s Largest list.
Mexican retailers get plenty of direct competition in their own country from U.S. retail chains. Besides Walmart, Costco, Victoria’s Secret, Starbucks, Burger King, McDonald’s, Tasti Dlite, Cold Stone Creamery, Wendy’s, YUM Brands, and Baskin-Robbins are some of the U.S. retail chains doing business in Mexico.
What follows is the complete list of the largest Mexican retail chains, according to fiscal year 2011 revenues. The number associated with each Mexican retail company indicates where the chain ranked compared to the 250 largest retail chains in the world.
