This is a list of the retail companies in Canada with the largest FY 2009 revenues, which were included on the 2011 Global Powers of Retailing list.
Compared to the 2010 Global Powers world's largest retailers list, the largest retail chains in Canada saw very little change. Canada's largest retail chains have the same relative ranking order within the Canadian retail industry. Almost all of Canada's retail chains dropped in ranking, however, when compared to other global retailers. Since the 2011 Global Powers rankings are based on 2009 revenues, it is duly noted that Canada's retailers were still suffering from the effects of the global recession.
The biggest change among Canada's largest retail chains can be seen with the Empire (Sobeys) and Metro supermarket chains. While Empire gained moved up on the global ranking list, Metro fell, widening the gap between the two supermarket chains. Apparently the Empire supermarkets found a way to capitalize on recessionary conditions while Metro fell victim to them.
The Liquor Control Board of Ontario joined the Global Powers list in 2011 with a ranking of #237, even though its revenue did not earn it a place on the 2010 list at all. Either Canadians were drinking more alcohol in 2009 to help them cope with the economic recession, or else the government-owned Liquor Control Board Ontario did not make its data available for last year's rankings.
What follows is a list of the largest Canadian retail chains ranked on the Global Powers of Retailing list compiled by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES Magazine, this is the list of the retailers who are leading the way for the retail industry. The number next to each company name represents the revenue ranking of the retail company, compared to 250 other "world's largest" retailers on the Global Powers list.
