The British Petroleum (BP) Founders Facts and Trivia:

BP's history extends back to 1901 when William D'Arcy's Anglo-Persian Oil Company first drilled for oil in Persia. BP's retail gas stations first opened in Britain in 1921. BP merged with U.S.-based Amoco oil company in 1998 and rebranded most of the retail gas stations and convenience stores in the U.S. to the BP brand in 2001. After the 2010 Gulf oil spill disaster there is speculation that the Amoco brand would be reinstated at the 11,000+ retail gas locations in the U.S.

BP has the second largest number of retail gas locations in the U.S. and is the largest foreign company traded on the U.S. stock exchange.

The BP corporate headquarters are located in London, England. BP has U.S. offices in Chicago, IL, Houston, TX, and La Palma, CA.

Although not specifically labeled a "mission statement," BP has a published statement of "What We Stand For":

"BP wants to be recognised as a great company – competitively successful and a force for progress. We have a fundamental belief that we can make a difference in the world.

We help the world meet its growing need for heat, light and mobility. We strive to do that by producing energy that is affordable, secure and doesn’t damage the environment.

BP is progressive, responsible, innovative and performance driven."

BP further defines its mission to be "progressive, responsible, innovative, and performance driven" with these explanations, some of which are surprising in light of the 2010 Gulf oil spill disaster.

"Progressive - We believe in the principle of mutual advantage and build productive relationships with each other, our partners and our customers."

"Responsible - We are committed to the safety and development of our people and the communities and societies in which we operate. We aim for no accidents, no harm to people and no damage to the environment."

"Innovative - We push boundaries today and create tomorrow´s breakthroughs through our people and technology."

"Performance Driven - We deliver on our promises through continuous improvement and safe, reliable operations."
