Volkswagen Group Founders Facts and Trivia:

Volkswagen, which literally translates as "the people's car" was a political promise of Adolf Hitler to produce a car that the average German worker could afford. Reportedly the initial design for what became the Volkswagen Beetle came from Josef Ganz. In 1933 automobile designer Ferdinand Porsche was engaged to design a "Volkswagen," but before the car could be produced, World War II broke out and the Volkswagen plant was used to build military vehicles. The first Volkswagen Beetles were not manufactured until 1945 in Wolfsburg, Germany.

The first Volkswagens Beetles were sold in the U.S. in 1949, and reportedly only two Volkswagen vehicles were purchased in that first year. Volkswagen Group of America was established in 1955, and the first U.S. Volkswagen production facility opened in New Stanton, Pennsylvania in 1978 to product the VW Rabbit. That plant closed down after just 10 years of production, and a brand new production plant was opened in Chattanooga, Tennessee on May 24, 2011.

The Volkswagen Group worldwide headquarters is located in Wolfsburg, Germany. The Volkswagen America headquarters is located in Herndon, Virginia.

The Mission Statement of the Volkswagen Group:

The internal mission statement of the Volkswagen group is not available to the public, but on November 25, 2010, the Volkswagen Group joined 21 German companies in agreeing to a "mission statement for responsible actions in business," which serves as a national mission for the VW group and focuses the Volkswagen leaders on the benefits of responsible business to consumers. The six principles of this shared mission statement are:
  • Business must serve the good of the people.
  • Business that serves the good of the people requires competition.
  • Business that serves the good of the people is based on merit.
  • Business that serves the good of the people takes place globally.
  • Business that serves the good of the people must be sustainable.
  • Business that serves the good of the people demands responsible.
