This is a comparison of the August same store sales figures reported by major U.S. retailers in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 2010 and 2011. The percentages reported for each retail company represent the change in August sales for stores open for at least 12 months, when compared to sales for those same stores in August of the previous year.
Very often conclusions are drawn about the strength of the U.S. retail industry as a whole based on the same store sales figure changes that occur from one month to the next in the same year. But since same store sales figures do not measure month-over-month trends, a same-year comparison is not valid.
The figures below will make a productive comparison possible for 2005 through 2011 in the month of August. This kind of year-over-year comparison is the only exercise that produces any kind of valid conclusions when analyzing same store sales figures.
