The restaurant sector of the U.S. retail industry consists of fast (quick serve) food, casual dining, and full-service dining establishments and food preparation and delivery operations. As the economic conditions in the U.S. declined, so did the amount of money that U.S. consumers spent at retail restaurants. In 2008 year-over-year retail restaurant sales declined 1.2% and in 2009 year-over-year retail sales declined 2.9% for the industry.

The number of visits to retail restaurants decreased 3% in 2009, according to the market research company NPD Group. Visits to quick serve/fast food restaurants increased slightly in 2009, but visits to midscale restaurants and fine dining restaurants declined by 2% each. The ongoing unemployment crisis has motivated diners to trade down, or to eliminate their restaurant dining altogether.

Sales at quick serve/fast food restaurants in 2009 were approximately $160 billion, and are expected to increase 3% in 2010 according to the National Restaurant Association. Sales at full-service restaurants were $182 billion in 2009 and are expected to increase 1.2% in 2010.

The total number of retail jobs in the U.S. retail restaurant industry decreased in 2009. This is only the second annual decrease the industry has suffered in 50 years. There are currently 12.7 million people employed in the U.S. retail restaurant industry. At the end of 2009 there were approximately 945,000 restaurant and food service outlets in the U.S.

According to the National Restaurant Association Restaurant Performance Index the restaurant industry scaled back its development plans for all of 2008 and 2009. Considering recent results, the expansion by multi-unit retail restaurants in 2010 seems ambitious, judging from the 2010 retail openings list.

Most of the largest multi-unit restaurant companies in the U.S. are publicly traded on the U.S. stock exchange, not privately owned. This is a complete list of publicly traded restaurant companies in the U.S. retail industry and their stock symbols. This list is arranged alphabetically according to the company name.
