Hot Topic stayed hot, topping its positive growth in 2008 with more positive same store sales growth in 2009, despite the crippling effects of the Great Recession. It wasn't until May, 2009 that Hot Topic showed any signs of slowing down. The lack of teen jobs in the summer of 2009 finally did curb the spending of the Hot Topic's target market, and the chain finally fell behind its own 2008 performance level.

Hot Topic hoped to capitalize on the Twilight phenomenon again with the release of the sequel in November, 2009, but found that to be a little more difficult the second time around. Competition for vampire-inspired fashion sales to New Moon fans was more intense, since the popularity of the horror flick was well-known to all retailers before the movie was released.
