The largest retail chains in the U.S. have historically fought against the unionization efforts of its employees very aggressively. Despite the active efforts of the biggest U.S. retailers to thwart union organizations in their workplaces, however, there are tens of thousands of retail employees who are members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Union.
Most of the retail workplaces with unionized employees in the U.S. are supermarkets and retail food operations. Efforts to organize employees behind unionization in other types of retail stores have not had widespread success, but news about retail employee efforts to organize unions in their retail workplaces is starting to be more common.
What follows is a complete list of stores and retail chains that had employee union representation with the UFCW as of June, 2011. Retail chains are generally organized as union workplaces one store at a time, and sometimes not the entire workforce is unionized, but only certain departments or classes of employees. This list of unionized U.S. retailers includes both chains and individual stores which have some type and size of employee union group.
In this list, if employee unions exist only at certain locations, the city and state of that location is listed.
